chuck.....help!! again pleasedamm newbies-i know dumb question again. lol and keep in mind this is my first horse that has four legs and can still run.
i ran a horse today that i claimed a few races back. he was my first horse to run over a 100 SP and he did 101"s back to back. so i wanted to test him today and put him in with a horse that had finished 2nd in a grade I, just 3 races back and he won, going wire to wire in a 104 SP. back in his prime he was stakes-placed, do you think he might have a shot in a little po-dunk stake, maybe like in outer slobovia somewhere? i probably will be hard headed, but i want to do the right thing and your opinion would be appreciated.

I think you probably should ask some of the better players around here rather than me
but, my two cents...awesome claim. I think that if you can find a small field than definitely take a shot. However, it may be wiser to take a shot at an open allowance first. See what that class jump does first. Even if he doesn't win teh open allowance, if he competes..then certainly try a stakes.
hope that helps some.

If you are a newbie, that horse is racing under your guidance like you're a genius. Very nice claim but that horse does have a bit of history and for a 7 year old, young legs. A number of things jump out at me. His very sporadic race history. Missing months sometimes between starts and missing the entire 2006 season. Noticed that you have run him every 2 weeks, not my cup of tea, but this horse has awoke to his form of 4 years ago.
So here is my take. If you are going to try a stakes, might as well strike while the iron is hot. This run isn't going to last forever so it's almost like now or never. Honestly, if it were my horse, I doubt a stake run would even enter my mind. But if this is something you want to do, I don't think anybody could blame you.
Good luck!

rethank you for your honest opinions. i am new, the first time i found the sim was in august, but i am learning fast. i grew up with horses though and worked at the race track from 1987-1996 in various positions. so i probably have a little more insight than the average joe on the street, but in no way would i ever claim to know anything about anything. i do do a good imitation as a sponge though and absorb as much information as i possibly can. plus the most important thing is that i have had some very good luck so far in my first few claims and purchases at the auction. what i am trying to accomplish at this point, is to just put myself in a position to compete with the veterans starting january 1. so it has been a crash course in how everything works and starting a process of finding horses and weeding them out. as far as running them every two weeks, i agree with a young horse or any horse that as a regular thing, but i am trying to learn what they like and the damm thing keeps coming back sharp. i was going to give him 5 weeks this time, but you may be right and this may be a temporary stay, in his fall down the ladder. i will have to think about it and see where he fits. again, thanks and beware i will be back for more.

nice claim test....as fab pointed out she's a 7 y/o with a bit of a history of running some quality races but seems to really be enjoying the frequent runs as she's almost equalled the same number of 100 SPs in her last 3 as she had her entire career.
If you look long and hard there are gems to be found on the scrap heap... here are a few I found:

This guy has won 5 out of 6 including stakes last as a 5k claimer and appears to be still on the rise with only 18 races. Actually i'm a lil disappointed he came up RTG instead of sharp yesterday as i wanted to run him in a G2 sprint next Sat...now i'm debating whether to still run at RTG....FAB - would u run in a stakes as RTG or just sharp?

This guy as a 4k claimer has won 6 of 9 and put up multiple 100 SPs and seems to like the stretch out. With only 21 races he too may still improve. FAB - do you think this guy would go further i.e. 10F ?

This filly is nicely bred for a 3500k claimer and altough hasn't won much is starting to put up some respectable SPs and at worst still makes a nice broodmare.
What i've seen in my short tenure is races are unique in a sense that
i've run in cheap claimers and have been beaten by 100 SPs and have run cheap ALW races and have been beaten by STKS level SPs i.e. 110 or so and of course have seen low 100 SPs win STKS races. Go figure!
If your entering STKS would sit and review field first and if field is relatively short and in your horses case mostly high 90's low 100's with maybe 1 or 2 standouts posting say 110's then go for it. Good Luck!

After you start seeing a few more of those 80-90's speeds again, I would consider this one for breeding a 3yr old using a better than average sire. One of the hardest things to do in the sim is to build up your list of good retired mares. Using good sires when you start will give you much better options a couple years from now (yes I said a couple years!!!)
Good luck and good claim.
